Seventeen people were injured when the Third Marine Parachute regiment demonstrated a hostage liberation, using live rounds by mistake.

A three year old boy who was shot in the heart and arm has stabilised after doctors performed an operation. Three more civillians are seriously injured. The incident was watched by hundreds of parents and children.

A witness, who asked not to be named, told AFP he saw seven or eight soldiers with guns taking part in the simulation, one of whom was posing as a terrorist in the middle of the spectators. "Suddenly, people were falling, we thought it was part of the exercise, and then we saw blood."

Well, THERE YA GO! That is why the French Army has been held in such high regard! Look at thier work in WWI and WWII !
They are UNSTOPPABLE I tell ya! A force to be reckoned with!
Why did NATO allow them to have live rounds? I thought that all French rifles were empty at all times?

How in the blue hell did they not know they were loading live rounds into their weapons? Come on now! I'm not in the military nor do I have military training in firearms but one thing I do know is what a blank looks like and what a live round looks like.

Well, it';s not that the French DON'Y use thier guns, so much as it is, the CAN'T use thuer guns... *cough*
I saw an auction on GunBroker for a case of French battle rifles. Never fired. Dropped once.

I call BS. When using blanks there is a blank adapter mounted on the end of the barrel. If they were doing this the barrel would have exploded injuring the soldiers first. If there were gobs of civilians, where are the photos and headline news. Or am I just missing it? Oh, and it comes from Sky news?

NEVER point your weapon at anything you are not willing to destroy. Come on, even I know that!

NEVER! I don't care if you think it's loaded with blanks. I don't care if you know for a fact that the chamber is empty. NEVER POINT THE *$^#@!& WEAPON AT A CHILD!!!!!

There need to be a lot more resignations/prosecutions than one senior officer. Who authorized this madness in the first place? A "simulation" of a combat scenario with real weapons in front of an audience? WTF? Why was that sergeant carrying live ammunition at all (he knew it was a demonstration for a civilian audience)? Why did he keep firing after THE FIRST PERSON WENT DOWN BLEEDING?!?!? 17 people injured!!! That's insane!

This has nothing to do with being French or making cheap-shot jokes about the French military. This has everything to do with being ROCK STUPID! If one or two people had been injured and the soldier ceased fire, that I could maybe see as a tragic accident. But 17 people? He had to keep pulling the trigger for that to happen. :rant:

UNLIKE the US military, this one was a stupid accident.

The US military KNOWS they're live rounds, and shoots at civilians anyways.

God bless the poor souls who got hit.

Yeah, unlike the US military that shoots civilians, realizes they're civilians, and shoots them with a coup de grace to the head instead of administering first aid...
